Australian Postgraduate Award in Data Mining applications to Computer-supported Collaborative Writing
The Australian Research Council (ARC) has funded an interdisciplinary project to develop innovative computer-supported writing support tools. The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies is seeking students interested in PhD research in the area of Data Mining and Computer Supported Collaborative Learning to be part of this exciting new initiative and apply for a full time scholarship sponsored by the ARC. Two scholarships are available. One will be for creating text mining algorithms and systems that interpret the students’ documents and the discussions about them. The second will be for developing process mining tools that extract patterns in the collaborative writing process. Applicants should have an interest in, and demonstrated experience with, web engineering and data mining. Proven skills in programming Java and evidence of a background in statistics and algebra are required. A willingness and ability to work together with an international open source community and to communicate effectively with non-technical software users is also essential. Web development experience is highly desirable. The scholarships are valued at $25,872 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress. Candidates must indicate which of the two areas they want to focus on.
Further information can be obtained from Dr. Rafael Calvo (text mining), (02) 9351 8171, email rafa@ee.usyd.edu.au, homepage: http://www.weg.ee.usyd.edu.au), and from Dr Kalina Yacef (process mining), (02) 9351 6098, email kalina@it.usyd.edu.au, homepage: http://www.it.usyd.edu.au/~kalina.
Applications should be sent to Dr. Calvo (School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Bldg J13, The University of Sydney, NSW 2006, Australia) and should include curriculum vitae, proof of citizenship or permanent residency, copy of academic transcript, and contact details of at least two referees. Note that international students can apply but the stipend does not cover any tuition fees payable by international students, and other sources of money would have to be sought.
